Should I buy a 05 subaru wrx with 81k miles ? Is too much miles a red flag ?

I want to buy this 05 Subaru WRX, but it has 81000 miles on it, thats an average of 40k miles per year should I be concerned? what type of questions should I ask the sales man? Blue book value on the car is $17400 and the dealer asking price is $14999. Is that a good price? Your Advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks ! The car is at a deler so I dont know who previously owned it.

  1. My first question would be how old was the previous owner??? If that person was young you can almost guarantee it's been "street raced" and dogged out.

  2. Depends on your buget. Even 14,999 is a little too steep for 81k. I would try to knock the price down a little more if you can. I also don't know about $17,400? I think that's with the car fully equipted. My status came out to 16,150.00 for a WRX 05' with 81k. Most WRX doesn't come fully loaded. Basiclly my advice would be search for the history, ask the dealer for a carfax for the car. If you see that the previous driver was an elder person then the car probably spent most of it's life on the highway or maybe even a rental car. The best thing to do is give them a proper offer, example: 13,500.00 and you pay for tax and paper work on top or 14,999 out the door. If they are desprite enough they will give it to you. But if they don't then it means they just got the car in the inventory and they are trying to high ball you. Don't get ripped off, take your time 81k is not bad but try to get a better price for it.

Remember mostly all cars break down from 60k to 80k miles. due to the fact that most auto company parts are only gurantee to last that long.

  3. 81k on a 2005 - leave well alone!!

  4. 81k is ok if its been serviced properly. of the dealer will tell you it has been even if he knows damn well it hasnt. only buy it if the service history is complete with a stamped up service book. you will be down on power a fair bit i rekon as the turbo will need reconditioning, thatts about £2K in british ounds. negotioate harder

  5. You can ask the salesman who the previous owner was, it will take him 2 minutes to check the deal jacket in the office. resistance here would be a red flag for me. It may have been on the road closer to 3 1/2 years.

sporty turbo car......would want to determined what kind of life it had.....are stock tires replaced with cheap dealer installed ones?

Look at paint closely...give it a good test drive, he may want to take it around the block once, but i'd want to hear that motor as it builds to near red line, feel it at 70 75 on the hiway any vibrations...listen

does shifter go into gear fast and smooth? Does the clutch grab the friction plate like a pit bull, or can you feel it let go a little.

engage the brakes at different speeds, does the pedal go down really far., its there any wheel shake.

Ok ....this is a deal where a $50 mechanic inspection is a good idea. The mileage is high but not a deal breaker, Subies are tuff little buggers.

I would ABSOLUTLY bargain this guy to the wall if i wanted that car......ready for Bear.....We don't know what $ he has in it.

  6. I own a 2006 Impreza, non-turbo 2.5i. Bought new about 2 years ago, now with 109,000 miles on it, about 55K a year. No problems whatsoever. Monthly oil, bi-monthly air filters and tire rotations. Nice thing is timing belt service is not due until 105,000 miles (unlike many domestic cars at 60K) and serviced at the dealer for under $300. The high mileage on a turbo can bring some concern, however, they have to be mainly highway miles, where the turbo is hardly even working. Nice thing about all Impreza's (WRX, STI, Base model) is that they are 100% Japanese parts (unlike the outback and legacy models). After all the miles on my car, the blue book is around 15K and I only paid 18K new, so 100K+ and only 3K in depreciation. Make sure service records are available on any used vehicle, especially one prone to "racing". Anyone I've known with a WRX has at least beat it up a few times, hard not to (especially when the muscle car gearheads think their mustangs or cameros can take you off the line).

Have the clutch looked at, and check for any signs of leaking oil, they are great cars, but the turbos are usually run hard.

    Hope this helps
