What are the limitations of VMWare Player? I see its free. But it says you can't make your own images. Does that mean that it is worthless unless you can find someone that has VMWare Workstation who can make images? Or does VMWare have some pre-made images that can be downloaded for free? Also, which OS's can I run for free using only VMWare player (assuming I don't know anyone with VMWare workstation)?
How to use image files with VMWare Player? I want to use VMWare Player to virtualize Ubuntu 7.10, as my disc drive isn't working at the moment I can't live cd it. Last time I used VMWare Player it only allowed you to open special files, so is there any way to use .iso files with VMWare Player?

Antivirus and Firewall in Virtual Machine (VMware Player)? Hello. I am currently using Windows XP Home in VMware Player with 2GB Ram (out of 4GB under Windows 7) and it connects to the internet and works fine. I want to know whether it is necessary to use an Antivirus (AVG) and a firewall (Zone) in the virtual machine when they are running through the host system (Windows 7)? Thank you

Uninstalling Vmware player leads to crash??? GAH, HELP...? I just installed vmware player, and i realised i actually needed to install vmware WORKSTATION, so i tried to install the workstation. my computer crashed, showed a blue screen of death and i had to reboot. now, i cant run vmware player or the workstation installer, and i cant uninstall vmware player without getting this crash. im thinking this has something to do with vmware changing my registry settings??? i'm getting really ticked off, because it's proving impossible to uninstall the stupid program! HELP! Btw it's iinstalled in "C:\Program Files\VMware" if that helps. If anyone knows how to remove this God forsaken program, please tell me!! Btw i'm running a 32-bit vista OS @Business M I don't think that was my problem, actually. The problem occurs because in order to even BEGIN installing Workstaition, i have to uninstall the old program (player). The error occurs when I'm in the proccess of uninstallation, and the screen goes all fuzzy and the blue screen comes up. Even in safe mode i cant get rid of the program (which is all I'm looking to do- REMOVE IT LOL). This program is stubborn! Is there any way i can just force it off my computer? D: That way i can install Workstation with no problems? Btw I actually don't really have a means of backing up files, I don't have any other device or anything. D: This is obviously gonna be a problem... Changing the settings you specified didn't work...back to the drawing board. >.>

Ive searched all over the net with no luck so if someone can please help that would be great! Ive installed VMWare player and downloaded backtrack 3. When I run VMWare player it opens up a window asking me to open and select a Virtual Machine. When I click open the file extension its looking for is a .vmx file which the backtrack files don't contain. So if it is possible can you please advise or do I need VMWare workstation for this to work? Thanks in advance for your help!! I'm running Windows Vista.
Can you load a WindowsXP image inside a Mac with VMware Player or something similar? Is it possible to use a program like the VMware Player on a Mac (with OS X Panther) to load an image of WindowsXP inside of a window? If so, can someone point me in the right direction? If this is actually possible I would also need a program that I could use to create a image of my WindowsXP machine. The goal would be to store the WinXP image on an external hard drive that I would carry with me since I understand it would be quite large. Please not that I'm not talking about the new intel mac's here and can't install WindowsXP in a dual boot setup. At the same time, I'm not looking for a emulator that runs programs made for Windows. I want to run the entire operating system off a external hard drive from within OSX. I was able to use VMware on my Windows PC to load a Linux image inside of a window so I figure this might just be possible? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Anyone know of a free or trial based version of a VMware player or similar program? Hey I just recently started playing with VMware at my school in my course, and I was hoping to get a copy for myself at home, but you need a serial number that you must pay for to use the program. I was wondering if there where any free trials out there that are available for download, or if anyone knows if there are any similar programs that are free, I know there are other programs like VMware player but these ones you also have to pay for. I am a student on a tight budget so if anyone know of a trial version or of a similar program that is free for use, I'd really appreciate some info. Thanks in advance.
Using Computer with multiple screens, mice, ect. connected to vmware VM's? I know that this is possible, but how do I get it set up? I currently have VMware Player, but will buy Workstation pretty soon. I realize that I could just get a few cheap PC's and VNC into the VM's, but I am wondering if there's a better way. For example, one thing that I want to set up is a custom media center running linux that is powered from my PC. Help is appreciated.
Can VMWare Server run from a command-line only? 1) VMWare Server is free, so is VMWare player. What's the difference? 2) Can I use VMServer on, say Ubuntu Server without XWindows installed? (with the VmImage on local disk, with VMServer installed) 3) Can I (using Player) connect over the network to the VMWare server's list of available VMImages? (Sounds like a great idea, who knows if I'm reading into this wrong..)
Virtual machines security? Can running virtual machines like VMware player keep you safe if your host computer is infected with viruses.
VMWare ESXi support USB devices? Currently I have VMWare player installed on a windows home server. The player can pass my USB TV Tuners to the windows 7 client. I would like to switch the configuration so the host is VMWare esxi... Does anyone know if you can pass USB ports to ESXi as you can with VMWare player?
How can I assign an audio channel to a program? Because my computer supports 7.1 audio, it has lots of spare audio jacks that I want to assign to different programs. I'm currently using 2 (Front left and right + rear left and right) out of a possible 4 output jacks leaving surround left and right + center free. I want the surround left and right to act as another stereo output for VMware player with XP running. Is there a program out there that can do this?

What is this file flash.ocx ? I have recently bought a new laptop and am frustrated at seeing how my PDA and mp3 player struggle to get to grips with Vista (I have Home basic). I have been thinking about dual booting or running XP in VMware player and downloaded a copy of Windows XP online. The dvd I burnt it on (I burnt the dvd on my desktop which is connected to the net and runs XP) will run on my desktop but won't even be acknowledged by my laptop. After applying windows XP settings I can explore the dvd, but when I try to run the install.exe I get error messages telling me that "this version of windows no longer contains the file flash.oxe" or to that extent. I am also referred to contact the support at flashexebuilder.com. What is the problem here? I have no idea whether flash media player is installed on my system, I didn't install it anyway and I don't seem to have any other problems elsewhere, like screensaver problems. What are my options and what do I do?
What's the best way to get/use Cisco Callmanager w/o spending big $$$? I need CCM to complete the CCVP if I'm going to pursue it all the way, but unfortunately, I don't work at a place which has it, and I'm not a Cisco gold partner. :( What would be the best way to get and install it? So far I've looked into installing a VMware player, but it's complex. I don't have a server nor an appropriate OS like Windows Server XXXX. And let's not talk about the actual CCM software I'd need, which is really big $$$. So how do "normal" people get the experience with this in order to pass CIPT/TUC (or the others)? I'm at an impasse and not sure what to do at this point. I could go for CME, but the CCVP tests test on CCM, so I don't think that's the way to go.
I cannot login to Ubuntu with VMware!!? After I installed VMware player on my computer, the first Operating system I download is Ubuntu 804 desktop image after the Ubuntu OS loads I see a login screen that asks for my username then my password. I do not understand why there is a password to Ubuntu. This is the first time I have used it, I have not setup any protected accounts on Ubuntu. Is there any step that I am missing?
How to Load a Virtual Machine at Startup? Hey--I have a laptop with windows xp--I do not want to partion or change the drive since i do not want to accidently mess things up. I would like to however test windows 7 rc. My laptop only has a 1 gb ram so i dont want to run a virtual machine inside of xp since it will slow it down badly. Can I use VMware player or Microsoft Virtual PC or any software like that, and configure a boot loader or a way of chosing to boot from the Virtual Hard Disk, OR the primary disk with my XP? I checked in the bios, but it did not detect my virttual disk. Any help will be appreciated, Thanks, Chris.
VMWare under Vista? Does anybody know if it's possible to install VMWare under Windows Vista? Under XP I using the free VMWare player together with a free utility called "VMX Builder" I was able to install any OS I wanted. Is this possible under Vista? If not with VMWare then does anybody know any software which will work? I would ultimately like to have Vista as the host OS and XP as the guest. Thanks in advance for any answers. @Richard S: I'm not stealing anything you fool, so get off your soapbox!
Two different network connections, at the same time, with programs using specific ones? This isn't a question, more like a working solution for those that need it. Assuming you have a wireless device, and an ethernet card, with two routers (2 internet connections), a spare copy of an OS, and a computer that can handle it! I was struggling with this myself, in trying to manage large file downloads without slowing down my personal network so I could also game. It's very simple: download VMware Player (free) and install a virtual computer. Mine uses 512 RAM and 1 processor core, since it's only handling downloads of files. You may want to be sure you have a computer that can handle this. You also need a copy of Windows to install. There are instructions around the internet to help you. Next, share a folder on that machine where you will store your downloads. Disable the default connection, and install the wireless drivers. When it asks you for the device, go to the VM tab, look for your device and enable (connect) it. Complete the install, connect to your network, start applications that will use this connection (they will need to be installed on the virtual machine), and bam! Just minimize the machine, and continue about your day while the computers handle the rest.
How do I run XP virtually in linux? I do NOT have a windows disc. My computer came with a recovery partition, NOT A DISC. And I accidentally overwrote that partition when I first installed linux. I am well aware of vmware player. However, it requires the stupid system disc, which never even came with my brand new computer, so I can't use it :( plus, i don't have the recovery partition. i really don't want to download an illegal copy of xp just to mount a virtual operating system. Please, how do I get this to work with the windows XP partition I already have? p.s. I have a NTFS windows XP partition, a linux swap partition, and an ext3 linux partition with ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.
What is an Unattended System on VMware marketplace? What is an Unattened System? I'm on Vmware marketplace. I installed the Server Console and the Vmware player. Is that all I need to run about 4 virtual computers? They are running on Windows 2000 and Windows Xp. Is that the Unattended system? Will I be able to install Windows Xp and 2000 without an ISO image? Also, can I pull the OS off of a computer in my working group? How can I set up a workgroup, with Windows 2000 and Windows Xp? All Virtual Machine, on a local server.
Linux/VMWare Installation Query!? I have posted this query before, but have still not succeeded in accessing anything on my Linux Mint7 installation. I installed a VMWare Player into my PC some months ago, into which I downloaded Linux Mint 7. I cannot seem to access anything . The opening Desktop arrives onscreen, with two ikons Computer and Home, but i do not understand how I can actually find an application to work in (i.e. a word processor etc) I would be most grateful if someone could assist. My original intention was to explore Linux this way, before obtaining a new PC and loading it with Linux, so that I could be independant of MS stuff.
VMware and Backtrack 3 wireless applications? Is it working? I understand that: "...any network interface adapter on the host will be represented by an amd pci ethernet controller in the virtual machine..." Given my host operating system is Windows (Vista if that's important), and that I have a wireless card, how do the wireless-related Backtrack applications (Airsnort, Kismet, etc.) work? Are they working at all? The results from using them are unclear. Are they actually scanning the radio signals, or something else? IF NOT ------------------------------ Are there any settings (Vista, VMware, Backtrack) that allow the wireless-related applications to work correctly (actually scan the radio signals)? That would be my ultimate goal. Is that possible? ------------------------------ THANK YOU! (I found it difficult finding useful information with Google) ***Note that I am currently using a bridged connection in VMware Player. Thank you for the quick response. No I do not. I only have Vista installed. If you have any information regarding the wireless applications, let me know. Thank you.
Installing tarballs, bundled packages in Linux Mint? I'm trying to install VMware player on my Linux box . I have downloaded the file from the site . How do i install it ? I went to Ubuntu and Linux Mint forums but they make it so hard for the beginner to understand . Can someone please explain the process to me with out the rocket science ? . Just break it down "Barney style " thanks Please dont tell me to use the repositories . Already have VirtualboxOSE installed and it conflicts with VMWare . So I need to get rid of Virtual Box and reinstall XP on VMWARE . The file I downloaded is " VMware-Player-3.0.0-203739.i386.bundle " from the VMWare site 32bit Linux
Virtual Machines for running Linux? Hey. I've tried VMWare player for running Linux. It only supports .vmx files, not .iso, so it won't work for me. I've tried VirtualBox, but fullscreen doesn't work, I've spent hours, days trying to make the guest additions work. Microsoft Virtual Machine is worthless, it won't even boot up my Linux OS. Parallels workstation fires up great, but won't connect to the net. Are there any other good Virtual Machines out there that I could try? I've had just the worst luck with them. Thanks guys. Also, VMWare Player creates this blue tool bar at the top of the virtual machine while in full screen that I hate. Any way to remove it?
How can I fix a few problems on VMWare Fusion? In case you don't know, VMWare Fusion is a program where you can create a virtual machine (if you're on Mac, it makes it so you can use a PC vise versa) and I'm having a few problems with it. A few months ago, I tried getting music on my mp3 player, that only works on PC's, so I put all the music I wanted onto VMWare Fusion. After finding out that I can't get the music on, I decided to listen to it on Windows Media Player. Now, whenever I open VMWare, there's one specific song that repeats about 3 seconds of itself over and over. I can't close Media Player, even when I select the CRTL-ALT-DELETE it doesn't show up. I can't click the Start button. What's wrong with it? How can I fix it?
assignment i dont understand? A Linux environment is needed to complete Activity 1 of this lab. You will need to complete Step 1 and 2 below before starting on Activity 1: 1. Install vmplayer a) Use the following link to download VMplayer: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ b) After downloading, install and configure the vmplayer on your home computer by following the installation instructions available through vmware. You need to ensure that virtual machine is working and connectivity is active. 2. Install Fedora a) Download the Fedora Core 5 Workstation installation from here: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/60 Activity 1 Description In Part 2 of the textbook Operating Systems, read Chapter 8 and complete the lab projects at the end of the chapter. Problem The problems are defined in the lab project manual. Procedure/Steps Note: Maintain a point-form journal of all actions you take while completing the lab, describing each step in your own words. Include any notes of steps or components within the labs that you are unsure of or that you feel require clarification. The overall goal of a point-form journal is to create notes that accurately describe actions you perform. These notes can be used for troubleshooting problems or for when you are repeating a similar task. The notes should appear in sequential order and be in an organized format which allows you to easily access the information. Step 1: Create a Linux-based tree structure. Step 2: Review the basic Linux commands used to create a tree structure. Step 3: Reinforce your understanding of the Linux-based tree structure. Step 4: Distinguish between navigating to a parent, child, and sibling directories in Linux. Step 5: Utilize the Linux (vi) editor to append, insert, yank, put, and delete text in a file. Step 6: Create files and directories, identifying the columns of the output of the Is –I command. Step 7: Utilize the sort command to sort data. Step 8: Utilize the cut and diff commands to manipulate text in a file. Step 9: Utilize the grep command to search for data within a file and use the find command to search for file names in Linux. Step 10: Utilize the redirection and pipe symbols in Linux. Step 11: Utilize the Linux Wildcard symbols. Step 12: Practice utilizing the sort, grep, and awk commands. Outcome Utilize and work with the Linux operating system.
